The Seminar was sponsored by Mr. Tahir Majeed Butt, an overseas Pakistani
residing in KSA. Mr. Tahir Majeed Butt is the founder member of Contact
Pakistan, KSA-the world’s largest VNGO for Pakistanis.
The seminar started with the recitation of Holy
Qur’an. Prof. Dr. Akram Chaudhary expressed his gratitude to the Eduvision
and Contact Pakistan for organizing the career planning seminar at
University of Sargodha, in his welcome speech. He said that University of
Sargodha is providing quality education to the students with a number of
facilities including state of the art Computer labs, Science Laboratories
and sports grounds. He claimed that University of Sargodha has the best
teaching staff for FSc students in the country with 90 Ph.D doctors out of
150 teaching staff. He advised the students to listen to the speakers
carefully and incorporate what they will learn from this seminar into their
future decision.
Talking to the participants, CEO Eduvision, Mr.
Yousuf Almas said that the process of career planning starts in the early
age of a child, when he/she desires of becoming a doctor or a pilot. In our
society the process the career planning starts right after the birth of a
child when the parents and the relatives start deciding of his/her career.
“Allah SWT created everyone with his/her own unique personality and given
him/her a separate identity. As leaves of same tree do not resemble with
each other; similarly children living in the same house and brought up by
the same parents usually have different and sometimes entirely opposite
personalities. So driving everyone on the same path is neither good for an
individual not for a whole society”, he further added.
He said that teacher and Parents play the most important part in the process
of career planning and they ought to be aware of the fact that every child
is not born to be a doctor or an engineer. Respect student’s desires; decide
keeping in mind the educational and mental capacity of the student and
practical requirements.
He said that career planning is done with the help
of available resources to achieve one’s goal in his life. “Three phases are
involved in the process of career Planning and these are Information,
preparation and Exploration. A student has to consider his social
background, qualification, marks and his/her attitude towards certain
subjects while choosing a field of study. Parents and teachers can play an
important role in this regard” he further added. He said that sometimes
parents and relatives decide about the career of a child totally neglecting
the aptitude, goals and educational background of the students that results
in ruining the life of the child. “While deciding about a field of study for
you, you must also consider the future requirements of the country and
global scenario”, he narrated. He said that students must also get
satisfactory information about the legal status of the institution,
accreditation status of the degree, fee structure and examination system
before applying for admission in a particular institution. He also guided
the students about the exact procedure of choosing a field of study.
Guiding the students about the field of Computer
science and Information Technology, Mr. Sohaib Ahmad Khan said that
Information Technology (IT) is one of the evolving sciences of engineering
expertise. Information technology is the combination of Computer sciences
and Telecommunication. Software is used to improve efficiency, and
accelerate the pace of work, in almost every walk of life. Nowadays doctors,
engineers, architects, people associated with media, designers, traders,
bankers, and even individuals of moderate households are exposed to IT in
some way or the other.
He said that main professions in this field are:
Ø
Computer Programmers
Ø
Software Engineers
Ø
System Analyst
Ø
Network and Database Administrators
Ø
Graphic Designers
“Computer programmers write and test the detailed
instructions comprising of small codes or lines, called programs that
computers follow to perform specific tasks. Programmers also conceive,
design, and test logical structures for solving problems with the help of
computer. Their work also involves figuring out which instructions to choose
to make computers do specific tasks using less memory and causing minimum
burden on the microprocessor. Software engineers design, test and evaluate
the software by applying the principles of computer science and mathematical
analysis. The main job function of Software engineers is to analyze users’
needs, and then design, test, and evaluate the software to meet those needs.
During this process they create the detailed sets of instructions, called
algorithms that tell the computer programmer what to do and how. They also
may be responsible for converting these instructions into a computer
language, a process called programming or coding, but this usually is the
responsibility of computer programmers. Different programming languages are
used depending on the purpose of the program. Programmers must know more
than one programming language, and because many languages are similar, they
often can learn new languages easily. In practice, programmers often are
referred to by the language they know, such as Java programmers, or by the
type of function they perform or environment in which they work—for example,
database programmers, mainframe programmers, or Web programmers”, he further
added.
“Software engineers, systems analysts and
programmers work together to make software. The main job function of
computer programmers is programming. Guidelines and specifications are given
by computer software engineers and systems analysts. The job of the software
engineer and system analysts is to design software—describing how it will
work—the programmer converts that design into a logical series of
instructions that the computer can follow. Software engineers and computer
programmers may also seek the job of system analyst after a handsome
experience”, he narrated.
He also guided the students about the following
qualities required to excel in the field of programming, software
engineering and related professions.
Ø
Good command on Mathematics
Ø
Creative
Ø
Sharpness (Intelligence)
Ø
Team work
Ø
Abstract thinking
Ø
Problem solving and analytical Skills
Ø
Patience, persistence, and the ability to perform analytical
work are the key elements for programming
Ø
The ability to work with abstract concepts and to do technical
analysis is especially important for systems programmers because they work
with the software that controls the computer’s operation.
Ø
Employers need programmers who are able to communicate with
non-technical personnel
Ø
Business skills are also important
Ø
Prefer to present in linear manner
Mr. Sohaib Ahmad Khan also presented the
introduction, pre-requisites, work/job style, scope, special qualities
required to excel in a particular field, and aptitude required for the
following fields of studies and disciplines offered in these fields.
Ø
Agriculture
Ø
Engineering
Ø
Management Sciences
Ø
Medical
Ø
Natural Sciences
Ø
Social Sciences
Mr. Sohaib Ahmad Khan also guided the students
about the opportunities available in Pakistan for different groups of study
i.e. Medical, Engineering, Humanities etc.
Students asked a number of questions in Q&A
session. At the end of seminar Mr. Yousuf Almas presented the shield of
seminar to Prof. Khawja Matloob, Incharge Inter Section, University of
Sargodha. The complimentary copies of the Career Planning guide were also
distributed amongst the students.
