Largely students make their decision on hearsay and remain bemused throughout the process of admissions, and they happen to miss a number of better opportunities due to poor planning, lack of information and guidance.
So, I am hereby listing the decisions and strategies for admission process step by step:
1. Select the most suitable degree program
The most important decision in the entire admission process is to decide of your degree program. This will be your career and simply the way of living for almost next 15-20 years. Select the most suitable degree program for higher education which is in accordance with your aptitude, skills, abilities and your interests. Although the decision is not so simple to make, you should consider consultation from your teachers, parents and preferably a career counselor. A few things that you can do on your own is to search about the nature of the job and skills required. Besides that a little information about the course contents, will let you know more on the subject and therefore things will get more feasible and lucid and you can decide much better to whether you want to take up the course.
2. Search closely related programs/careers to your desired programs
The second most critical and highly neglected point is to search for the related, similar programs . A single program normally has three to four related programs and even the same program is offered by two three different names. For example, computer engineering is offered by ten different names by different universities. Some universities offer it as a discipline/degree program, others offer it as a specialization in electrical engineering degree program, and furthermore some might offer it as a specialization under electronics engineering. Congruent names of the same program are system engineering, hardware engineering and some others. Its closely related programs are electronics, electrical, control systems, telecom, mechatronics and control. Similarly if you are targeting Public Administration, then Public Policy, Governance, Strategic Studies, Business administration, Political Science & IR should also be in your priority list. For details of related programs of each category visit Program Section at EduVision website http://www.eduvision.edu.pk/programs.php
3. Search the Best Universities for your desired programs
The next step is the selection of a university which is best ranked for your desired program. A big lot of students is mistaken at this stage. A university may have the best overall ranking (HEC Ranking) but all of its programs are not ranked at the same. For instance, LUMS may be the top preferred option for Management sciences but not for engineering programs. Similarly even though NUST is the considered the best option for engineering but for Mechanical Engineering or Chemical engineering UET Lahore may be the best choice.
You need to have a prioritized list of at least 7 target institutions where chances of your admission are good.
4. Select the universities as per your marks and merit
If you are a high achiever (more than 85% marks), then you should choose five best institution, well renowned. Also apply in at least three well known institutions where weightage of FSc marks is high in merit formula. This will hike your chances of getting admission in a reputable university even if your entry entry test performance is low. Additionally you must give one month to entry test preparation.
But if your marks are in the range of 70 to 80% or lower, then you should target at least three universities where weightage of entry test is high. Many universities have even 75% or more weightage of entry test, which increases the chances of being selected if you perform well in the entry test. In this case, you must prepare for entry test for at least three months.
5. Appearing and preparing for entry test
Prepare well for the entry test, also avail maximum chances. You need to note that many universities offer two to three chances for entry test. You should appear in entry test at least twice to maximize your marks. But never prepare or appear for the tests whose dates are closer to your FSc examination schedule. This will adversely affect both your examinations and your entry test.
It is very critical to stay updated and keep track of all the relevant deadlines. Although this is a tough job for a student or parent to surf the websites of all institutions, and they often stick to only three to four institutions, and thereby miss the opportunities or admission deadlines of some of the universities.
