CS & IT is on the boom now a days, students want to become Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg. Even motivational speakers quote a lot from the former two, which also increases the interest in the field. Another reason is the mystical career and passion of being a 'HACKER'.
YES, CS & IT has changed the world. It has made many billionaires and millionaires and is continuing to change life. But let's be honest, CS & IT career is not for anyone and everyone. It demands and requires a lot of qualities and faculties that we will be discussing today.
CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION
CS and IT demands innovation. Innovative ideas made Bill gates, Mark and Steve, what they are today, not their coding skills. There might be better coders in the world than all three of them. So if you have good command on coding skills, it does not guarantee you the success. Innovation and creativity will. If you are a follower, always like to work on set procedures and commands, need someone to administer your work, and need someone to push you, then IT is not for you. Even Freelancing, the greatest attraction for pursuing IT careers, require these qualities.
PATIENCE AND PERSISTENCE
Patience and Persistence is the key to success, this cannot be better said for any other career but IT. It requires a lot of patience and persistence to develop something, find bugs in it, try and try again. Try to find out the bugs that you don’t understand why are appearing, trying to increase efficiency of the system, trying to build something different. Breaking the stereotype procedure and achieving something that seemed impossible before.
If you really want to be someone, then you need some innovative idea to work on, must have persistence to try again dozens if not hundreds of time, to make it possible, and then have the patience to wait for its success that might take years if not decades.
Mathematics is the basic requirement enter into any career in Computer Sciences. Complex mathematical equations and formulae must be on your fingertips. After all a computer is nothing but a 'BIG CALCULATOR' as defined by our 'PATHAAN' brothers.
Although the world is unlimited in this field, but following areas have greater scope in Pakistan:
- Programming and Development (especially App and Web Development)
- 3D- Animation and Gaming
- Graphic Designing
- Information Security
- Networking & Databases
Some might argue that Artificial Intelligence is the future, but realistically we don’t see any job market here in Pakistan in the coming years. It will take some time to mature.
Is Completing BS or MS enough
No, not at all. Degree will not help you at all. Certification will, get professional certifications in your area of interest, i.e. Networking, development, databases, ethical hacking etc… IT is a career where certified professionals without proper BS degree are earning more than an MS Degree holders. Even employers look for those who have proper certifications. Another important thing in this regard is that our students normally join any institute for these certification programs, but don’t appear for the examinations as cost of examination is high. Let me mention here that as long as you don’t appear in examinations, joining an institution and going through the course material is not of any use at all. Because ultimately it is the examination that will certify you that you are good enough to work in this particular area. A few examples of certifications are:
- A+ (CompTIA)
- Adobe Certified Associate (ACA)
- Adobe Digital Marketing Accreditation
- Apple Certified Pro (for Final Cut Pro X and Logic Pro X)
- AppleCare Service Certifications – ACMT & ACiT
- Advanced Information Security (AIS)
- Cisco Certified Technicians (CCT)
- Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA)
- Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP)
- Ethical Hacking Certifications
- IBM Professional Certifications
- Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3)
- Linux+ (CompTIA)
- Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA)
- Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE)
- Oracle Cloud Certifications
- Oracle Database Certifications
- Oracle Java Certifications
- Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)
