Islamabad High Court (IHC) has banned physical punishment of children in schools. The petition was filed by social activities and Zindagi trust president Shehzad Roy. IHC has also issued notices to all the parties named in the plea to reply in two weeks. Shehzad Roy is seeking a permanent ban on corporal punishment at schools.
The counsel of Shehzad Roy informed the court that a child had passed away in Lahore due to corporal punishment. He called on the court to abolish Section 89 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which allows parents, guardians and teachers to use corporal punishment in "good faith” and protects them from the consequences of administering corporal punishment.
The counsel of Shehzad Roy was of the view that the brutal torture by teachers and school authorities directly affects the mental growth of the children.
Justice Minallah remarked that National Assembly also approved a similar bill highlighting the issue. However, the counsel of Shehzad Roy said that the legislation process is being delayed due to political matters. The court banned the corporal punishment and adjourned further hearing till March 5.
