PLANT PATHOLOGY

Introduction

Plant Pathology is the scientific study of the plant diseases, organisms and environmental conditions that cause infectious disease, the mechanisms and the process by which this occurs, the effects of diseases on plant growth, yield and quality and the mPethods of preventing these diseases.

Nature of Work

A plant pathologist is a professional who specializes in plant health much as a physician specializes in human health or a veterinarian in animal health.

Plant pathologists

• Examine diseased plants with the help of diagnostic tests and techniques.
• Determine the causes of the disease and
• Take the curative actions and helps farmers, growers and land owners to produce more and better quality production by controlling disease in their plants.
• Control diseases by biological or chemical methods.
• Investigate how air, temperature and moisture, affect the disease development.
• Collect the soil and plant samples and identify the organisms.
• Test new varieties of seeds and these verities are not released by governmental departments or commercial seed companies until and unless passed by the plant pathologists in field experiments.
• Cooperate with plant breeders and crop management, insect and weed specialists to manage crops.

Degree Duration M.Sc. Ph.D.	B.Sc. 4 Years 2 Years 3-5 Years	FSc. Pre-medical (Bio-Chem-Phy) Equivalence if other than FSc (A’Level etc..) 50% marks

Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Interest towards nature and physical stamina are two most important qualities that one should have as one has to work in farms, fields and forests. Most of agricultural scientists need an understanding of basic business principles, the ability to apply statistical techniques and the ability to use computers to analyze data and to control biological and chemical processing.		Plant pathologists are employed by Provincial and federal government departments Agrochemical companies Fertilizer companies Colleges and universities Agricultural farms and nurseries Research organizations
