The Hunan University of Chinese Medicine (HUCM) is about to set up a research center "Academician Professor Atta-ur-Rahman One Belt and One Road TCM Research Center", in recognition of the services of Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman. The opening ceremony of the proposed research center will be held on October 23rd to 25th 2019, in HUCM.
The HUCM, almost a century old university in china, is one of the largest public sector universities of China. HUCM is not only one of the best Chinese universities but is also recognized internationally for excellence and quality of research. A large number of foreign students are enrolled in its MBBS program. Almost 500+ Pakistani students are also continuing their studies from HCUM china currently.
The school was founded in 1934, when the name Hunan Medical College in 1960, changed to ordinary higher undergraduate colleges Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine .Currently, the school offers 21 undergraduate majors, belonging to medicine (MBBS), science, engineering, management science, literature five disciplines.
Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman completed his PhD in organic chemistry from Cambridge University in 1968. He has 1142 publications in several fields of organic chemistry including 775 research publications, 43 international patents, 70 chapters in books and 254 books published largely by major U.S. and European presses. He is the Editor-in-Chief of eight European Chemistry journals. He is Editor of the world’s leading encyclopaedic series of volumes on natural products “Studies in Natural Product Chemistry” 55 volumes of which have been published under his Editorship during the last two decades.
Prof Dr Atta ur Rahman is the first scientist from the Muslim world to have won the prestigious UNESCO Science Prize (1999) in the 35 year old history of the Prize.
It is also pertinent to mention here that this is not the first time that an International University has named its research center after Dr. Atta. Prior to this, the largest university in Malaysia, University of Technology Mara, Malaysia UiTM, which is the largest university in Malaysia has also established an institute named, “Atta-ur-Rahman Institute of Natural Product Discovery (RiND)” in 2013. Pakistan's top and one of the best university, National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has also established an Institute “Atta-ur-Rahman School of Applied Biosciences (ASAB)” at its main campus in Islamabad.
