Lahore: In a major educational reform, the Education Department has decided to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a formal subject at the primary school level, marking a first in the country's educational history.
According to education officials, AI is proposed to be included as a compulsory subject for students from Grade 1 to Grade 5 starting from the 2027-28 academic session. A separate class period will be allocated for the subject, similar to other core subjects.
Sources said that under the proposed system, students will be required to pass the AI examination just like other subjects in the curriculum.
Officials stated that the initiative aims to familiarize children with modern technology from an early age and prepare them for the demands of the future digital world.
The Education Department believes that early exposure to artificial intelligence concepts can help improve students’ creativity, problem-solving abilities, and learning skills.
According to sources, the initial AI curriculum proposal is expected to be presented at the PECTA Board of Governors meeting for approval.
Education experts have described the move as a significant step toward modernizing the education system, although details regarding the curriculum, teacher training, and implementation strategy are yet to be announced.
