Islamabad (P.R.) The development of a country and nation does not depend on the number of doctors, engineers, and scientists it has, but rather on the quality, expertise, and capabilities of its social scientists. In Pakistan, young people generally aspire to become doctors or engineers and pursue careers in these fields. However, a major field whose importance should be given greater recognition is often overlooked because we have been conditioned to consider Social Sciences, commonly referred to as the “Arts,” as a field suitable only for academically weaker students.
In reality, the development of a country and society greatly depends on professionals associated with the Social Sciences. Presidents, Prime Ministers, Federal Ministers, judges, bureaucrats, business leaders, and military officers, among many others, require knowledge and expertise rooted in the Social Sciences. Around the world, Social Science professionals are held in high regard. Therefore, it is important that Pakistan’s talented and capable youth also consider Social Sciences as a career option so that they can contribute to the development and progress of the country and nation.
To highlight the importance and scope of Social Sciences, counseling sessions were organized in various schools and colleges of Islamabad under the “Mera Career” program, with hundreds of male and female students participating.
The joint program “Mera Career”, organized by the Federal Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, Federal Directorate of Education, and Eduvision Career Counselling, aims to familiarize students with various educational and practical career options and help them make informed career choices by considering their abilities, interests, and personality.
During the counseling sessions, students were informed that Social Sciences is a broad field offering numerous career pathways according to individual interests and aptitude. These include Human Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, History, Governance and Political Science, Law, Education, Islamic Studies, Economics and Commerce, Accounting and Finance, Management Sciences, Language and Literature, Media Sciences, Art and Design, International Relations, Public Policy, Public Administration, Development Studies, Defense and Strategic Studies, Anthropology, Social Work, and many other fields.
A career in Social Sciences has always been a vital need of society and will continue to remain so in the future. Wherever human populations exist—whether in cities, countries, institutions, or businesses—there will always be a need for professionals with expertise in the Social Sciences. Countries, institutions, and businesses all require skilled individuals with an understanding of human behavior, society, governance, economics, and organizational systems to function and progress effectively.
