In a major relief for students, Government College University (GCU) has decided to reduce semester fees by up to 60% for several undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in an effort to make higher education more affordable and boost admissions.
According to the university administration, the semester fee for selected departments will be reduced from Rs. 68,000 to Rs. 30,000. The revised fee structure will apply to the relevant programs offered at both the Old Campus and New Campus.
University sources said the decision was taken after some academic departments experienced relatively low enrollment in recent admission cycles. By lowering tuition costs, the university aims to encourage more students to choose these disciplines and ensure their continued academic growth.
The departments included in the fee reduction initiative include Archaeology, Persian, Urdu, History, and around 10 other academic programs.
Officials believe the move will remove financial barriers for many students, allowing them to pursue quality higher education at a significantly lower cost. The university also expects the reduced fees to increase admissions in the affected departments during upcoming admission sessions.
Faculty members have welcomed the decision, saying it will ease the financial burden on parents and make university education more accessible for deserving students. They added that the initiative reflects GCU's commitment to promoting academic disciplines that have seen declining enrollment while expanding educational opportunities for talented students.
University authorities said the fee reduction is part of a broader strategy to strengthen academic programs, improve student access to higher education, and encourage greater participation in diverse fields of study.
