The Punjab Higher Education Department has introduced a new Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) programme in government colleges across the province. The two-year diploma is being introduced as an alternative pathway for students interested in information technology and will be considered equivalent to the Intermediate in Computer Science (ICS) qualification.
The initiative aims to expand access to IT education in government colleges and provide students with a practical and technology-focused academic pathway.
The Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) Colleges has issued the fee structure for the new DIT programme and directed government colleges to begin the admission process.
DIT to Be Equivalent to ICS
According to the Higher Education Department, the newly introduced two-year DIT will be equivalent to ICS.
This equivalence could provide students with an additional route to pursue higher education in computer science, information technology and related fields after completing the diploma, subject to the admission requirements of universities and relevant regulatory bodies.
Students should, however, check the eligibility requirements of individual universities before applying to degree programmes after completing the DIT.
DIT Classes to Start in Current Academic Year
The department has instructed government colleges to start DIT classes during the current academic year.
All relevant government colleges have reportedly been directed to make the necessary arrangements for admissions and commencement of classes.
The move is expected to increase the availability of IT-focused education within the public-sector college system.
