In a move aimed at strengthening classroom learning and improving the quality of education, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced that he will personally begin teaching students in government schools from the first week of September.
The minister revealed that English and Chemistry are his favorite subjects and will be the first courses he teaches. He said he plans to teach English in primary schools and Chemistry in high schools, while also taking classes in other subjects whenever needed.
According to Rana Sikandar Hayat, he will make surprise visits to one government school every week, where he will teach students without prior notice. Neither school administrations nor education officials will know in advance which school he will visit or when he will conduct a class.
Speaking about the initiative, the education minister said he has great respect for teachers and would be proud to stand in front of students as a teacher himself. He explained that the initiative follows the Punjab Chief Minister's directive for ministers to engage directly with schools to better understand classroom conditions and educational challenges.
He added that interacting directly with teachers and students will provide first-hand insight into the realities of public education, helping the government identify weaknesses in teaching practices, assess academic standards, and implement more effective education reforms.
The initiative is expected to offer policymakers a closer look at the challenges faced by government schools while demonstrating a hands-on approach to improving the province's education system. If implemented consistently, it could become a unique model of direct ministerial involvement in classroom teaching and school monitoring.
