The Punjab government has decided to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a new subject from Class 1 to Class 12 as part of a major reform of the provincial school curriculum.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed the relevant authorities to develop an AI curriculum covering students across all school grades. The plan was discussed during a special meeting on education reforms, where officials presented proposals for updating the existing curriculum.
AI Education to Start From Primary Classes
Under the proposed plan, students will begin learning about artificial intelligence from the early years of schooling. The subject will continue through higher secondary classes, with the curriculum expected to be designed according to students' age and educational level.
The government has also directed officials to focus on establishing AI laboratories in schools so that students can gain practical exposure to emerging technologies alongside classroom learning.
Textbook Content to Be Reduced
The AI initiative is part of a broader curriculum reform plan. The Punjab government has decided to reduce the overall volume of school textbooks by 25 percent.
The reform aims to reduce dependence on rote memorization and give greater importance to understanding concepts. The revised curriculum will cover subjects including English, Mathematics, Urdu, Social Studies and Early Childhood Education.
QR Codes to Provide Video Lessons
New textbooks will also include QR codes. Students will be able to scan these codes using digital devices and access video lessons related to specific topics in their books.
This initiative is expected to provide students with additional learning material beyond the printed textbook and increase the use of digital resources in classrooms.
Weekly Teacher Training Planned
The government is also planning changes to teacher training under the new curriculum.
One day each week will be dedicated to teacher training, while authors of the newly developed textbooks will train teachers on how to effectively use the revised books and curriculum in classrooms.
Wider Education Reforms
The AI curriculum is part of a wider education reform package being introduced in Punjab. The government is also focusing on improving primary education, digital literacy, teacher training and the overall quality of learning in public schools.
The proposed introduction of AI from Class 1 through Class 12 would give students continuous exposure to artificial intelligence and related digital concepts throughout their school education.
