What is IELTS?
IELTS (International English Testing System) is an English language proficiency test that is developed and run by the British Council in Partnership with IDP Education and Cambridge Assessment English.
IELTS is accepted across 140 countries. IELTS is required for work, study, and migration in English-speaking countries like the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland.
IELTS Paper Pattern
You are assessed on the following four things:
- Listening: You are assessed on how well you understand ideas, recognize opinions, and follow the development of an argument. (40 Questions – 30 minutes plus 10 minutes transfer time)
- Reading: to see how well you read for general sense, main ideas, and if you understand the inferences and opinions of the author. (40 Questions- 60 minutes)
- Speaking: Through this, it shows how well you can communicate, express and justify your opinions and information on day-to-day topics as well as common experiences. (3 parts – 11-14 minutes)
- Writing: to see how well and how accurately you can write a response, organize your thoughts and how well do you use your vocabulary and Grammer. (2 tasks- 60 minutes)
What are the different types of IELTS exams?
1. Academic module
Choose this if you want to study at Undergraduate or postgraduate level or if you are seeking professional registration (doctors and nurses)
2. General Training module
Choose this if you wish to migrate to an English-speaking country.

How to apply for IELTS?

- Choose your test country, city, test format, and test dates,
- Click more tests on the screen if the closest dates don’t suit you.
- Scroll down the list and choose the date and location that best suits you.
- Create an account.
- Choose who you are booking the test for.
- Fill out the personal details.
- Register the date and time
- Pay online or download the application to print, complete and submit to your chosen test centre.
If you booked IELTS on paper or by computer, your test centre will send you an email once your application has been processed, confirming the day and time of your test. Your Speaking test may be moved to a different day, which your test centre will confirm. If you registered for IELTS online, you will receive an email confirming your test booking, and your Speaking test will normally be scheduled before your other tests.
Should I take IELTS?
If compared to other tests of similar purpose, IELTS might be more expensive but it is used more worldwide than others. It helps in getting admission to Universities but also helps get a work visa which other tests like Duolingo do not.
