The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced plans to implement the National Curriculum of Pakistan 2026 for students in Classes 9 to 12 from the 2027 academic year.
The revised curriculum will become mandatory for public and private schools across the province, with all institutions required to use textbooks approved under the new framework.
The Directorate of Curriculum and Teacher Education (DCTE) has issued instructions for implementation, while the KP Private Schools Regulatory Authority has directed private schools to prepare for the changes.
Subjects Covered Under the New Curriculum
The revised curriculum will cover the following subjects for Classes 9 to 12:
-
English
-
Urdu
-
Mathematics
-
Computer Science
-
Chemistry
-
Biology
-
Physics
General Science will be included for Classes 9 and 10 only.
The curriculum will provide a common framework for teaching these subjects across the province, with schools required to align their teaching materials and examination preparation with the revised syllabus.
New Textbooks and Examination System
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board will prepare or revise textbooks according to the new curriculum.
However, textbooks must receive prior approval from the Directorate of Curriculum and Teacher Education before they can be distributed to schools.
All educational boards in KP will also conduct examinations based on the revised syllabus.
This means students will need to prepare using the approved textbooks and updated curriculum rather than relying on materials based on the previous syllabus.
Mandatory Implementation for Private Schools
The KP Private Schools Regulatory Authority has instructed school principals to review the implementation guidelines and ensure that their institutions are ready before the 2027 academic year begins.
Schools, textbook publishers and other relevant authorities will be required to update their teaching materials and examination preparation in line with the revised curriculum.
Authorities have warned that institutions failing to comply may face legal action under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Supervision of Curricula, Textbooks and Maintenance of Standards of Education Act, 2011.
The implementation of the National Curriculum of Pakistan 2026 is expected to bring changes to classroom teaching, textbooks and board examinations for secondary and higher secondary students across KP.
