The Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training has approved the New National Curriculum of Pakistan (NNCP) 2026, introducing changes to primary education from the 2027–28 academic year.
The revised curriculum will cover Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) through Grade 5. It will apply to public and private schools in Islamabad and educational institutions operating under federal administration across Pakistan.
The changes aim to strengthen foundational learning, introduce technology education at an early stage and provide a more structured approach to science and social studies.
What Changes Will the New Curriculum Bring?
The approved curriculum introduces changes to the subjects taught at different grade levels.
1. Core subjects for primary students
Urdu, English and mathematics will remain the main academic subjects. Health and physical education, along with arts and crafts, will also be included in the curriculum.
2. Introduction of ICT from Grade 1
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will become part of the curriculum for students in Grades 1 to 5. This will introduce children to technology and digital learning at an early stage.
3. A new subject for Grades 1–3
Students in Grades 1, 2 and 3 will study a subject called “The World Around Us.” It will provide an integrated approach to understanding the environment and everyday life.
4. Science and social studies from Grade 4
Science and social studies will be taught as separate subjects in Grades 4 and 5, replacing the integrated “The World Around Us” approach used in the earlier grades.
The subject structure is intended to help students develop basic knowledge of their surroundings before moving to more specialized areas of study.
Where Will the Curriculum Be Implemented?
The ministry has issued notifications to provincial governments, including Punjab, regarding the implementation of the new curriculum.
The approved curriculum is expected to be made available through the official website of the National Curriculum Council (NCC).
The announcement currently confirms the curriculum's subject structure and implementation timeline. Further details about textbooks, teacher training, assessment methods and the transition from the existing curriculum will be important as implementation approaches.
When Will the New Curriculum Start?
The New National Curriculum of Pakistan 2026 is scheduled to be implemented from the 2027–28 academic year.
Schools and education authorities will need to prepare for the revised subject structure before implementation begins. The changes will affect early childhood education and primary classes, with ICT introduced from Grade 1 and science and social studies taught separately from Grade 4.
The new curriculum is part of the federal government's efforts to revise primary education and strengthen foundational learning across the country.
