New Zealand has introduced four changes to its student visa rules, affecting work rights, English-language requirements, visa processing and the time students have to plan their next steps after completing their studies.
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) confirmed that the updated rules came into effect on October 27, 2026.
1. Master’s Research Students Face New Work Limits
Students enrolled in master’s-by-research programmes will no longer have unlimited work rights during their studies. They will now follow the same work conditions as other master’s students.
Under the revised rules, eligible students can work up to 25 hours per week during academic terms and full-time during scheduled holidays.
2. English-Language Ability Becomes a Key Factor
INZ has strengthened its immigration instructions regarding English-language proficiency. English ability will be an important factor when assessing whether international students can comply with their visa conditions.
Students should therefore pay attention to their English-language skills and their ability to meet the requirements attached to their visas.
3. Wider Powers to Suspend Visa Processing
Immigration New Zealand can now suspend the processing of student visas in a broader range of situations. This includes cases where authorities are investigating possible non-compliance by an education provider.
The change gives immigration authorities greater flexibility to pause applications while potential compliance issues are examined.
4. More Time After Course Completion for Some Students
Some international students will receive additional time to decide their next steps after finishing their courses.
Previously, students whose visas expired one month after their course ended had a limited period to make arrangements. Under the new rules, this period has been extended to two months.
However, the existing March 31 visa expiry date remains unchanged for visas that follow that specific schedule.
The revised rules affect students differently depending on their programme, visa conditions and circumstances. Those planning to study in New Zealand should review the work restrictions attached to their visas and check the applicable requirements before making employment or post-study plans.
Students already studying in New Zealand should also confirm how the changes apply to their individual visa conditions through Immigration New Zealand's official guidance.
