The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has introduced a new terminology for doctors undergoing postgraduate medical training across the country.
Under the new directive, doctors currently undergoing postgraduate training will no longer be referred to as “Postgraduate Trainees.” Instead, they will be designated as “Specialty Registrars.”
PMDC has issued instructions to government hospitals and medical institutions across Pakistan to adopt the new designation in their official communication and records.
According to the directive, the term “Specialty Registrar” should be used for doctors who are receiving postgraduate training in their respective medical specialties.
The council has directed relevant institutions to implement the change and use the new title instead of “Postgraduate Trainee” for these doctors.
PMDC stated that the change has been made to maintain the dignity and professional standing of doctors undergoing postgraduate training.
According to the council, referring to these doctors as “Postgraduate Trainees” may give the impression of a lower professional status. The term “Specialty Registrar,” on the other hand, reflects their professional role while they continue their specialist training.
The directive applies to government hospitals and medical institutions across Pakistan and is intended to standardize the designation used for doctors in postgraduate medical training.
