The Board Committee, comprising chairpersons of all nine educational boards in Punjab, has approved major examination reforms aimed at modernizing and improving the transparency of the Matric and Intermediate examination system.
Under the new policy, the traditional manual checking and monitoring system will gradually be phased out. The decision marks a significant step toward building a more reliable, transparent, and technology-driven examination framework across Punjab.
Biometric Attendance Mandatory for Students
As part of the reforms, biometric attendance will be compulsory for all students appearing in board examinations.
Starting from 2026, students registering for Class 9 and Class 11 will provide their thumb impressions during the registration process. These biometric records will be used for verification and entry at examination centers, ensuring authenticity and preventing impersonation.
Education officials believe that biometric verification will significantly reduce cheating, fake candidates, and examination fraud.
Digital Marking System Introduced
The committee has also approved the implementation of a fully digital marking system.
Under this new system:
-
Answer sheets will be scanned.
-
Copies will be checked on computer screens.
-
Automated systems will help minimize totaling mistakes and marking errors.
Authorities state that digital marking will improve accuracy, eliminate calculation errors, and enhance transparency in result preparation.
Science Practical Exams to Be Strengthened
Reforms will also focus on making science practical examinations more effective and meaningful. The aim is to ensure that students are assessed based on actual practical knowledge rather than routine formalities.
Phased Implementation from 2026
The reforms will be implemented in phases. In the first stage, biometric registration for Class 9 and Class 11 students will begin this year, setting the foundation for a fully digitized and transparent examination system in Punjab. The primary goal of these reforms is to modernize Punjab’s board examination system, enhance credibility, and ensure fair assessment for all students.
