The Punjab government is considering starting summer vacations in schools earlier than usual due to rising temperatures, heatwave warnings, and the expected Eid-ul-Adha holidays.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Punjab is likely to experience extremely hot weather during May, June, and July. In its latest advisory, the PDMA warned that temperatures across most districts of Punjab may remain above normal from May 7 to May 11, with chances of a severe heatwave in several areas.
The increasing heat has already started affecting daily routines and the education sector. Sources say the Punjab government is reviewing the possibility of closing schools from May 27 instead of the regular summer break schedule that usually begins on June 1.
One of the main reasons behind the expected early closure is the Eid al-Adha holiday period. Eid holidays are likely to fall from May 27 to May 29, while May 30 and May 31 will be weekend holidays. This could create a long break for students and teachers, making it more practical to begin summer vacations earlier.
However, education authorities have not yet issued a final notification. Officials say the decision will depend on weather conditions and the official Eid-ul-Adha announcement by the moon sighting committee.
At the same time, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has suggested reducing both summer and winter vacations in the future to make up for academic losses. The proposal aims to increase the number of school days from 180 to 190 annually.
Meanwhile, private schools have requested the government to allow summer camps during the vacation period. They have proposed holding classes from 7 AM to 10 AM so students can continue learning while avoiding the extreme afternoon heat.
Parents, students, and school administrations are now waiting for the Punjab School Education Department to announce the final summer vacation schedule.
