Lahore: Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has come under intense criticism after his recent remarks about government school teachers triggered a strong reaction from educators and social media users across the province.
Speaking at a convocation ceremony in Multan, the minister claimed that some government school teachers remove ceiling fans and take them with them when they leave schools. The statement quickly went viral, with many teachers and citizens describing the remarks as unfair and disrespectful to the teaching community.
The comments sparked a heated debate online, with educators arguing that the statement unfairly portrayed thousands of dedicated government teachers in a negative light. Many teachers said the remarks ignored the challenges they face, including overcrowded classrooms, limited resources, poor infrastructure, and staff shortages.
Several social media users pointed out that school equipment is often shifted between institutions under official departmental procedures, especially during transfers, school mergers, or administrative changes. Critics argued that these factors were overlooked in the minister’s statement.
The controversy has led to growing calls on social media for the minister to clarify his remarks, while some users have demanded a public apology.
Teacher groups and education supporters say that instead of criticizing teachers, authorities should focus on addressing long-standing issues in government schools, including a lack of facilities, inadequate infrastructure, and shortages of teaching staff.
The incident has once again sparked a wider debate about the challenges facing public education and the relationship between policymakers and the teaching community in Punjab.
