Lahore: In a significant step towards modernizing higher education, public sector universities in Pakistan have decided to introduce a mandatory 3-credit-hour course on Artificial Intelligence (AI) across relevant degree programs.
Under the decision, all public universities have been directed to incorporate a course titled “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” into their academic curricula. The move aims to equip students with essential digital and technological skills required in an increasingly AI-driven world.
The initiative follows an advisory issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and was endorsed during a consultative meeting of university vice chancellors.
To facilitate implementation, the Information Technology University (ITU) Lahore developed three proposed AI course modules. The course outlines were subsequently approved during the 45th meeting of the higher education authorities.
According to officials, the AI course will be introduced gradually across all relevant degree programs. Universities have been instructed to align their curricula with HEC policy and ensure the course is incorporated at the earliest opportunity.
In addition, a formal notification has been issued to all public sector universities in Punjab, while the approved course outlines have been shared with universities nationwide.
Education authorities say the initiative reflects the growing importance of artificial intelligence in higher education and is intended to prepare students for future technologies, innovation, and the demands of the digital economy.
