The Punjab government has announced a major initiative to provide 100,000 electric bikes (e-bikes) to students across the province through an interest-free installment scheme, aiming to make education more accessible by offering affordable and environmentally friendly transportation.
The announcement was made by Provincial Minister for Education Rana Sikandar Hayat, who said that the first phase of the program will exclusively benefit students. He explained that the initiative is designed to reduce transportation costs for students while promoting the use of clean energy vehicles.
According to the minister, students will be able to purchase e-bikes through easy monthly installments of approximately Rs. 2,100. To further reduce the financial burden, the Punjab government will also provide subsidies on the down payment and registration charges.
Rana Sikandar Hayat said that each eligible student will receive government support of up to Rs. 70,000, significantly lowering the overall cost of purchasing an electric bike. The subsidy is expected to make the scheme affordable for a larger number of students from different financial backgrounds.
The provincial government plans to distribute 100,000 e-bikes under the program, making it one of the largest student-focused electric mobility initiatives in Pakistan. Officials believe the scheme will not only improve students' access to educational institutions but also encourage the adoption of eco-friendly transportation, helping reduce fuel consumption and environmental pollution.
The education minister emphasized that the entire scheme will be based on interest-free financing, ensuring that students can repay the cost through manageable installments without any additional financial burden.
Further details regarding the eligibility criteria, registration process, application dates, and distribution schedule are expected to be announced by the Punjab government in the coming weeks. Students will be able to apply once the official registration portal is launched.
