Lahore: The Punjab government has revised its admission policy for government colleges, reducing the annual student enrollment growth target from 20 percent to 10 percent for the current academic session.
According to an official notification issued by the Directorate of Public Instruction (Colleges), the new policy will be implemented in more than 750 government colleges across Punjab.
Education authorities said the decision was made after reviewing the current enrollment situation and the available capacity of colleges. Officials observed that several institutions have already admitted students beyond their approved capacity, creating pressure on classrooms, faculty, and other facilities.
Under the revised policy, colleges will now determine their admission targets based on local demand, available infrastructure, and institutional capacity instead of following a uniform province-wide target.
However, colleges with low student enrollment have been instructed to make special efforts to increase admissions by 20 percent. The government aims to ensure better utilization of educational facilities and resources in institutions where seats remain vacant.
The earlier policy requiring a 20 percent increase in admissions was introduced two years ago for all government colleges in Punjab. The latest changes reflect a shift toward a more flexible and needs-based approach to student admissions.
The Directorate of Public Instruction has also directed college administrations to strengthen their admission campaigns and take practical measures to attract more students at the local level.
