Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has revealed that a proposal is under consideration to announce summer vacations in schools across Punjab from May 22 to August 2 due to the ongoing heatwave and rising temperatures in the province.
Speaking to the media, the provincial education minister said that a final decision regarding summer holidays will be taken on May 11 after reviewing the weather conditions and other factors. He added that the government is also considering the option of organizing summer camps during the vacation period to help students continue learning activities.
The possibility of early summer vacations has increased due to the severe heatwave alert in Punjab and the expected Eid ul Adha holidays. According to sources, Eid holidays are likely to fall from May 27 to May 29, while May 30 and 31 are already weekly holidays, creating a long break for educational institutions.
Officials believe schools may be closed from May 27 instead of the usual summer vacation schedule that normally begins on June 1. The Punjab government is monitoring the weather situation closely before issuing the final notification.
Meanwhile, Rana Sikandar Hayat has also proposed reducing the duration of summer and winter vacations in the future to compensate for academic losses and increase the number of annual academic days from 180 to 190.
On the other hand, private schools have requested the government to allow summer camps during the holidays from 7 am to 10 am so students can continue educational activities in safer morning hours and recover learning gaps caused by extended closures.
According to the Education Department, the final summer vacation schedule will be announced after reviewing the weather forecast and the official decision regarding Eid ul Adha holidays.
