Punjab’s education system is likely to see changes this year as the government reviews the schedule for summer vacations 2026. Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has confirmed that the final decision will be made after May 15, putting an end to ongoing speculation among students, parents, and schools.
Speaking about the situation, the minister shared that the government is actively considering reducing summer vacations by 15 to 20 days. The main goal is to recover academic losses and ensure that students complete their syllabus on time. Officials believe that long breaks often disrupt learning continuity, making it harder for students to stay on track.
To improve academic outcomes, the Punjab government plans to increase the number of teaching days in the academic year from 180 to 190. This step aims to provide more classroom time, helping teachers cover the syllabus more effectively and giving students better preparation for exams. Along with summer vacations, authorities are also reviewing winter holidays, with a proposal to reduce them by 5 to 6 days.
However, no official notification has been issued yet. The education minister clearly stated that any final decision regarding school holidays will only come after approval from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Until then, all proposed changes remain under consideration.
At the same time, weather conditions may influence the final decision. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has already warned about a possible heatwave across Punjab in the coming weeks. Experts suggest that if temperatures rise to extreme levels in late May, the government may announce early summer vacations to protect students’ health, similar to what happened last year.
This situation puts the government in a balancing position. On one hand, officials want to improve academic performance by increasing teaching days. On the other, they must ensure student safety during extreme weather conditions.
For now, students and parents should wait for the official announcement expected after mid-May. The final decision will determine whether summer vacations in Punjab become shorter or begin earlier due to heatwave concerns.
