Optometrist is a health care provider who specializes in the examination, diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of diseases and disorders of the human visual system, the eye, and the associated structures. They also provide pre- and post-surgical care for various conditions and procedures, including cataracts, and retinal problems. Optometrists provide most primary vision care. They examine patient’s eyes to diagnose vision problems and eye diseases, test their visual acuity, depth and color perception, and ability to focus and coordinate the eyes. Optometrists prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses and provide vision therapy and low-vision rehabilitation. Optometrists analyze test results and develop a treatment plan. They administer drugs to patients to aid in the treatment of vision problems. They care for patients before and after surgeries such as laser vision correction and cataract removal.

Career Opportunities

Optometrists often specialize in sports vision, treatment with contact lenses and vision therapy. Others work exclusively with children, the elderly, or people who require unique devices to see. The majority of optometrists work in a general practice. Others consult, teach, or conduct research. Throughout the worldnumerous specializations courses are offered in different areas of Eye Care. M.Sc., M.Phil. and PhD programs are also options available for a graduate pursuing higher studies. Optometrist is also eligible to apply for the foreign and local scholarships for higher studies offered by the Higher Education Commission, Govt. of Pakistan

Optometrists should not be confused with ophthalmologists or dispensing opticians. Ophthalmologists are physicians who perform eye surgery, as well as diagnose and treat eye diseases and injuries
